Renowned as only habitat of its type in the Indian sub continent, Desert National Park is placed in the Indian state of Rajasthan at a short distance from the town of Jaisalmer. Indicated by the hot and humid climate symbolized by the dense climate, fossil dating back to 180 million years old (the period of Jurassic Dinosaur) has been found in this place.

If you think that wildlife sanctuaries are all about green cover with dense forests, trees and lakes you will be totally wrong if you pay a visit to desert National Park. Though second to the India’s largest Hemis National Park of Ladakh, Desert Nationla Park covers an area of 3, 162 square km and supports a fragile eco system that consists of rocky out cliffs, salt lake bottoms, and sand dunes. The park is home to various species of wild animals, plants and avian fauna and it would be a great delight to be here to experience the diversity.
The view of the park is astonishing and is a photographer’s delight. The Sam sand dunes located in close proximity in the Thar Desert is really captivating and to capture it in your ultra zoom SLR camera will be a memorable experience. But make sure to carry a bottle of water and a packet of snacks along with you while venturing to several places in and around the park.
Flora: The Park is extremely fragile but previous signs of water in this place can still be seen as flora like ronj, dhok, palm trees, and ber can be spotted in this place.
Fauna: Bengal fox, desert cat, desert fox, wolf, chinkara, hedgehog are some of the fauna that reside in this park. Blackbuck can be spotted frequently. Some of the reptiles dwelling in this heaven for creeping creatures are saw scaled viper, monitor lizard, spiny tailed lizard, common krait and Russells Viper etc.
Avian Fauna: The Park comprises a wide number of birds including resident and migratory birds which fly from far distance. Some of the birds include Short Toed Snake Eagles, Macqueen’s Bustard, sand grouse, partridges, Cream Coloured & Indian Coursers, Red Necked & Peregrine Falcons, desert Warbler, Egyptian Vultures, Black Crowned Sparrow Lark, Greater Short toed & Desert Larks, Chestnut bellied, Short-eared owl, Great Indian Bustard and many more. The one meter great Indian bustard is an endangered species and is one of the major attractions for bird watchers.
Jeep safari is one of the popular activities to spot avian and other faunas in the park. It helps to explore the larger distance of the park in a relatively shorter period of time. Beside jeep safari tourists can also indulge in bon fire and camping.
Best time to Visit: November to March is perfect time for visiting this place.
