Jaisalmer is a situated in the northwestern province of India. This historic city is present just 575 kms away from the capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur. You will be amazed to know that once upon a time Jaisalmer was known as “the Golden City”. This was because of the buildings which were constructed by sandstone that used to glow in golden color in the sunlight.
Jaisalmer is a place where you will find historical forts, magnificent palaces and many spectacular Jain temples. These Jain temples are sculptured in such a way that no one can stop being mesmerized by the architectural and framework of the place.
Jaisalmer has many Jain temples. And these world famous temples are present in the Jaisalmer Fort. The construction of the Jain temples in Jaisalmer pretty much resembles the Dilwara temple. When you visit the Jain temples you will find the shrines of Gods Sambhavnathji and Rihabdeviji.
It is an astonishing fact that these temples are very old as they were built between the 12th and the 15th century. The architecture of these temples is such that the whole world acclaims its exquisiteness. You will be able to find intricate engravings on the walls of the temples. The material used in these walls is the yellow sandstone. When you visit the place you can find a different kind of calmness and serenity. One can experience this calmness from morning to 12pm in the afternoon. If you want to have knowledge about the temples then you can visit the Gyan Bhandar library which is present in the fort itself to help the tourists have a better picture. This library has a vast amount of books related to the temples and also has age-old scripts.
Jaisalmer has seven beautifully carved Jain Temples in its fort. The seven temples are:
The very first temple is the one being dedicated to the eighth tirthankar(Jain Teacher), Chandraprabhu. And so the name of the temple is named after him. The symbol of this great tirthankara is the moon.
The Rikhabdev Temple is situated on the right side of the Chandraprabhu Temple. You can find spectacular sculptures on the walls being protected by glass cabinets. The pillars found in this temple are sculpted with the carvings of gods. You can get a feeling of inner peace when you visit this temple.
A few steps behind the Chandraprabhu temple you will find the Parasnath Temple. At the very entrance of the temple you will find an enormous gateway which has engraves of the apex tirthankaras.
Leading from the Parasnath temple you will find the Shitalnath Temple which is dedicated to the 10th tirthankara. You will find a shrine composed of eight precious metals in this temple.
Further a door will lead us towards the temple of Sambhavnath.
Shantinath Temple built in 1536, is steps before the Sambhavnath Temple. You can find a gallery in this temple of several images of the saints.
The Kuthunath Temple built in 1536 is just steps below the Sambavnath temple.
However, when on a visit to Jaisalmer a visit to the Jain temples is a must.
